WEANACK SCHOLAR FOR 2017: Weanack Land Limited LLC, Charles City County, Virginia, has been supporting students at Old Dominion University since 2000 by providing funds to allow them to help build, manage, and sample the monitoring wells in and around the sediment disposal facility adjacent to Shirley Plantation. Under the guidance of Dr. Rich Whittecar and with logistical help from the Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at ODU and the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Science at Virginia Tech, several dozen students have gained valuable experience during the regular sampling events conducted at the facility, experience that benefits the students by complementing their classroom and laboratory activities and enhances their resumes after graduation.
Weanack Land Limited LLC continues to provide support for regular sampling and other activities including a stipend to support student summer research. The graduate student serving as the 2017 Weanack Scholar is Rachel Dunleavy.
