ACTIVE PROJECTS

MonarchTeach – Retooling Teacher Education for STEM Pre-Service Teachers at ODU  A joint program of the College of Science and Darden College of Education, MonarchTeach aims to increase the number of STEM majors at ODU who graduate with the background to become effective secondary school teachers.  Funded to date by a $1.5M grant from Virginia’s Department of Education and supported by the Office of Academic Affairs and many local school districts and community partners.  MonarchTeach website:  http://www.odu.edu/monarchteach

D’n’A – Discourse and Argumentation Institutes.  Professional Development workshops for secondary teachers from Virginia Beach and Portsmouth that emphasize the use of ADI methods in science classrooms. (ADI – Argument Driven Inquiry).  Headed by Dr. Joanna Garner (ODU), these workshops relied on a team of outstanding science faculty from Tidewater Community College – Mike Lyle, Fred Stemple, Casey Clements, and Billy Younger.

Bridges – Building ADI into Elementary Science Lessons.  Professional Development workshops and year-long coaching for elementary teachers from Hampton that emphasize the use of ADI methods.  Headed by Dr. Joanna Garner (ODU’s Center for Educational Partnerships)

KEYS – Building ADI into Middle School Science Lessons.  Professional Development workshops and year-long coaching for middle school teachers from Portsmouth and Norfolk that emphasize the use of ADI methods.  Headed by Dr. Melani Loney (ODU’s Center for Educational Partnerships)

EarthQuiz – Using images of geological features visible on Google Maps to promote geological education.  A project headed by Dr. Declan DePour (ODU) and Dr. Steve Whitmeyer (JMU).  Explore the world (and add more sites and questions, too):  http://earthquiz.net
